When teachers and school leaders participate in research studies, they experience benefits that extend well beyond their classroom walls. At the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO), we’ve recently had the privilege of fostering research partnerships focused on understanding how to enhance evidence-based practices in classrooms.

In May 2025, AERO CEO Dr Jenny Donovan gave a keynote on explicit instruction at the Advancing Effective Education Summit in Sydney.

On 28 August 2025, AERO hosted a public webinar exploring findings from its recent report into how long it takes to learn English while learning the curriculum.

AERO has been working closely with Australian schools and systems to learn about promising approaches for implementing evidence-based teaching practices in different school contexts. This discussion paper is the second in a series that shares insights from our work with schools in the Learning Partner project.

AERO has developed these practice guides in partnership with MultiLit and the Institute of Special Educators to help teachers refine or refresh their understanding and practice of supporting students with diverse needs.

This practice guide will help teachers and school leaders understand different paragraph types. It’s part of a suite of resources designed to support explicit writing instruction in the classroom. It can be used in conjunction with AERO’s guides on simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences and sentence combining.

This model introduces an approach to teaching writing that is explicit and systematic, and that can be used in all subject areas that require students to write. AERO’s School Writing Instruction Framework (SWIF) professional learning courses align with and support the implementation of this model.
